On Manhole Covers and Culture

Studying manhole and utility covers has been a hobby of mine since highschool. Not one of those endeavors that begins with a fully formed rational behind it, but nevertheless I began taking note of the existence of such objects. Surprisingly, a good number of these covers that I come across have a touch of artistic consideration about them. Certainly these are pieces of low culture, not meant for a gallery collection. But I think it is worth taking the time appreciate their design as we pass by.

Hopefully, I am not too terribly alone in all of this, and that others of you have your own form of low culture that you cherish. I think that high culture needs a healthy foundation of low culture to properly spring forth from.
