Civic By Design Forum

Last Tuesday, I had the opportunity to speak at the Civic By Design architecture forum about structural masonry buildings and the Hope For Architecture program. Even on a rainy night so close to Christmas, there was a good gathering of architects, students, developers, and caring citizens. What a joy it is to dialogue with folks who care deeply and passionately about their community!

Right across the street from where the forum is held, Google has set up one of their new Google Fiber centers. After the meeting, we all walked over to look at this new building with its new technology... only the building wasn't new. Google, in its cutting-edge wisdom, restored an old brick warehouse to serve as its model flagship. Quite a tangible endorsement when the simplest of solid brick structures is desired above new and ornate buildings. It's encouraging  to know that a good number of folks recognize the need to approach building and development in Charlotte with the longview in mind. Desiring to create a community with a sense of place and lasting identity.

For those in the Charlotte area, I highly recommend taking part in Civic By Design's monthly forums. Thanks again to Tom Low, for inviting me to speak, but more importantly, for inviting me into such a valuable conversation. I look forward to attending future meetings and engaging with what others have to contribute.
